Awareness On Substance Abuse.

Happy New year guys!

This year, I’m going to discuss some of the popular social norms which are dangerous to health.

Substance Abuse is One, Practiced by your friends , family even the drunk down the block.

You might ask” What is Substance Abuse”?

Substance Abuse is the harmful use of psychoactive substances like hard/illicit drugs and alcohol. It interferes with your Health, work and social relationship.

In this century we live in, if you use hard drugs you’re termed as a “Cool” Person, if you don’t use them you’re termed a “Learner”, but if you could stop and say to yourself for a sec “Is this Healthy”?

No, It’s not. I get it there’s no harm in taking a drink or two, but that doesn’t mean you should abuse it.

There are lots of disorders and health problems caused by Substance Abuse but I’ll narrow the list down:

  1. Antisocial Personality Disorder
  2. Alcohol Abuse( leads to alcoholism)
  3. Alcoholism( Different from alcohol abuse)
  4. Substance Use Disorder
  5. Cocaine dependence

Just to name a few

Substance abuse differs from addiction. Many people with substance abuse problems are able to quit or can change their unhealthy behavior. Addiction, on the other hand, is a disease. It means you can’t stop using even when your condition causes you harm.

Commonly abused substances are;

Alcohol

Alcohol affects everyone differently. But if you drink too much and too often, Your chances of liver damage, high blood pressure, alcohol disorder, injury and accidents are up.

Prescription Medicine

These can be just as dangerous and addictive as illegal drugs. You can abuse medicine if you:

  • Take medicine prescribed for someone else
  • Take extra doses or use a drug other than the way it’s supposed to be used
  • Take the drug for a non-medical reason

Types of prescription drugs that are most often abused include:

  • Opioid pain relievers(Tramadol🙄)
  • Medicine used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
  • Anxiety medicine
  • The most common, Cold And Cough medicine, which contains dexamethorphan and codeine which makes you feel intoxicated when taken in high doses.

Heroin

Heroin belongs to a group of pain-relieving drugs called narcotics. The drug comes from the opium poppy flower.

Heroin provides a burst or rush of good feelings, and users feel “high” and relaxed. This may be followed by drowsiness and nausea.

Many people who are addicted to heroin inject the drug into a vein with needles, and may inject the drug several times a day. Over time, the needle marks, or tracks, can become permanent scars.

An overdose leads to death.

Cocaine

Aka “Coke”

Extracted from coca leaves, cocaine was originally developed as a painkiller. It is most often sniffed, with the powder absorbed into the bloodstream through the nasal tissues. It can also be ingested or rubbed into the gums.

To more rapidly absorb the drug into the body, abusers inject it, but this substantially increases the risk of overdose. Inhaling it as smoke or vapor speeds absorption with less health risk than injection.

Marijuana

Aka ” Cannabis, Weed, Dope, Pot ”
Most people who use cannabis smoke it in a joint, which is like a cigarette, or in a bong, which is a water pipe that might have been bought at a shop or made at home from things like old soft drink or juice containers. A lot of people think bongs are less dangerous because the water makes the smoke seem less harsh, but actually all ways of smoking cannabis can increase the likelihood of respiratory diseases.

Cigarettes and other Tobacco Products

SmOKerS aRe LIabLe tO dIe yOunG 😏

You may not think of these as illicit drugs, but tobacco has nicotine, which gives it’s users a rush of energy and pleasure.

What could go wrong? It’s just lung cancer.

Signs of a Substance Use Problem

When you first start taking a substance, you may think you can control how much you use. But over time, you may need more of the drug to get the same feeling or effect. For some people, that can lead beyond abuse to addiction. Signs that you may have a problem with substance abuse include if you:

  • Lack interest in things you used to love
  • Stop taking care of yourself
  • Spend more time alone than you used to
  • Sleep at odd hours
  • Have problems at work or with family
  • Switch quickly from feeling good and bad
